چکیده

[1] Absolute plate motion models with respect to a deep mantle reference frame (e.g., hot spots) typically contain some net rotation (NR) of the lithosphere. Global mantle flow models for the present-day plate setting reproduce similarly oriented NRs but with amplitudes significantly smaller than those found in some high NR Pacific hot spot reference frames. It is therefore important to understand the mechanisms of NR excitation, which we attempt here with two-dimensional cylindrical models of an idealized Pacific domain. We study the influence of slab properties, oceanic ridge position, continental keels, and a weak asthenospheric layer on NR and trench migration. Fast slab return flow develops in models with stiff slabs and moderate slab dips. Rapid NRs, comparable to the high NR Pacific hot spot reference frames, are

A Review of the Role of Subduction Dynamics for Regional and Global Plate Motions

3 DOI 10.1007/978-3-540-87974-9, © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009 Abstract Subduction of oceanic lithosphere and deep slabs control several aspects of plate tectonics. We review models of subduction dynamics that have been studied over the last decade by means of numerical and analog experiments. Regional models indicate that trench rollback, trench curvature, and back-arc deformation m...

Pacific trench motions controlled by the asymmetric plate configuration

[1] We present a novel explanation for absolute trench-normal motions of slabs surrounding the Pacific. Rapid subduction-zone retreat on the eastern side of the Pacific and slow advance in the west can result from the large-scale asymmetric plate configuration. We use simple fluid dynamics to explain the mechanical background of this hypothesis, and we use the results of a simple finite differe...

The dynamics of double slab subduction

S U M M A R Y We use numerical models to investigate the dynamics of two interacting slabs with parallel trenches. Cases considered are: a single slab reference, outward dipping slabs (out-dip), inward dipping slabs (in-dip) and slabs dipping in the same direction (same-dip). Where trenches converge over time (same-dip and out-dip systems), large positive dynamic pressures in the asthenosphere ...

Multi-scale dynamics and rheology of mantle flow with plates

[1] Fundamental issues in our understanding of plate and mantle dynamics remain unresolved, including the rheology and state of stress of plates and slabs; the coupling between plates, slabs and mantle; and the flow around slabs. To address these questions, models of global mantle flow with plates are computed using adaptive finite elements, and compared to a variety of observational constraint...

Controls on trench topography from dynamic models of subducted slabs

A finite element method with constrained elements and Lagrange multipliers is used to study tectonic faults in a viscous medium. A fault, representing the interface between overriding and subducting plates, has been incorporated into a viscous flow model of a subduction zone in which both thermal buoyancy and the buoyancy associated with the phase change from olivine to spinel are included. The...
